About the event:
Open lecture: ‘Maidan cases: shootings on Instytutska Street through the eyes of Judge Serhiy Dyachuk’
Serhiy Dyachuk will share his unique experience in presiding over the largest criminal case in Ukraine's history—unprecedented both in the tragic nature of the events and the complexity of the proceedings.
During the lecture, you will learn about:
● A landmark case in Ukraine’s history. Five former Berkut officers were accused of shooting 48 protesters and injuring 80 others on Maidan in 2014. The trial lasted eight years, culminating in a 1,700+ page verdict delivered on October 18, 2023.
● Details of the judicial process. The case involved over 500 witness testimonies, the first use of a jury trial in Ukraine, the replacement of defendant cages with transparent booths, and live-streamed court sessions.
● The challenges of delivering the verdict. What made the decision-making process difficult? Were the judge and jury always unanimous? What arguments were pivotal in reaching the court's conclusion?
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the judge their questions.
