Kyiv School of Economics invites you to join the open lecture and Q&A session: "Governing Deep Differences"
How can societies with deep, persistent divisions govern themselves without slipping into violence?This talk argues that pairing modus vivendi—pragmatic “live and let live” compromises—with polycentric governance expands the range of workable arrangements.
The discussion will explore how modus vivendi shifts attention from idealized theories of justice to the minimal conditions required for social order and mutual accommodation, and how polycentric systems—multiple overlapping centers of decision-making—can deliver these conditions in practice. Drawing on real-world examples, the lecture will highlight factors that contribute to resilient institutions in some of the most complex environments.
