Join us for a vital conversation on the global fight against authoritarianism, featuring a focus on Ukraine’s ongoing struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights. The event will explore the broader implications of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and the role of the United States in supporting democratic movements worldwide.
This discussion will also address the human cost of war, the resilience of civil society under siege, and the necessity of international solidarity in times of political repression and armed conflict. Through personal experience and legal insight, the speakers will highlight why defending human rights in Ukraine today is central to the global defense of democracy.

Maksym Butkevych — Journalist and human rights activist; co-founder of Hromadske Radio; former prisoner of war, held in Russian captivity for over two years after joining the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2022.Steve Swerdlow — Associate Professor of the Practice of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Southern California; human rights lawyer; former Senior Central Asia researcher at Human Rights Watch and consultant for several international organizations.
